Born again newbie in need of help/advice/mentoring

I'm a newbie and I need a bit of help.

Background (you can skip this paragraph if you want): I haven't played PS2 since around July 2013, so a lot of things that seem old to you will be very new to me. As an example, yesterday - my first day back into the thing excluding the 15 minutes I played a fortnight ago to test out my new gaming PC - I saw this massive, fat thing on the radar; it turns out it's the MAX radar signature. A couple of weeks before I quit, SOE had just released the ability to change squad colours. If I ask anyone now, the reply would be "it's always been like that." No, not for me it hasn't. And that's when I realised that PS2 this is still an FPS with all the normal FPS stuff, but this is a very different FPS to the one I stopped playing nearly a year ago.

I would really appreciate it if someone would link me to some up-to-date guides, tutorials or simply a one-to-one chat for things that didn't exist "back in my day":

[li]Base capture mechanics (in case they've changed)[/li]

Oh, one thing I had just come across:

What is this "server smash" people are talking about on Reddit and why is there so much raging about it? Do they actually have server vs server matchs now? :blink:

Yup, here's the after action report, BRTD filled in some blanks as reserves. More info can be found on various Planetside 2 (sub) reddits.
