Daybreak Games has announced PlanetSide Arena, a battle royale take on the PlanetSide franchise.

PlanetSide Arena launches on PC on 29th January 2019 priced €16.79. At launch, it includes a first-person shooter battle royale that comes in three types: solo for 100 players, teams of three for 102 players and a 250 versus 250 player mode called Massive Clash. It's all set on a huge 8k x 8k, four square kilometer map called Echoes of Amerish, which is based on Amerish, the third continent added to the world of Auraxis for PlanetSide 2.

Three classes are available at launch, each with their own abilities, utilities and passives. All classes have jet packs and all can summon a vehicle to zip around the map at any time. Because of this, there's a freedom of movement to proceedings. But, countering this is a longer time to kill than in most other battle royale games, fuelled by a shield system that can make characters feel tanky.

it is good news for planetside 2 as it ensure the survival of the game. its also shares the same code base as planetside arena, so any additions or improvements in planetside arena can be easily be ported over to planetside 2 and vice versa.

Planetside 2 producer letter: https://www.planetside2.com/news/ps2-producers-letter-dec-2018

Hello Auraxians!

PlanetSide Arena was announced today, and I know there are many questions about PlanetSide 2 and the future of our game.

The PlanetSide 2 Development Team remains dedicated to developing, supporting, and improving PlanetSide 2. Our content plans for 2019 include the upcoming continent Oshur, the Nanite Systems Operatives faction, and more. This game remains our focus and our priority.

The main difference going forward is that the PlanetSide Arena team is also using our Forgelight engine, which means the work they do, and the improvements and upgrades they make, can also come over to PlanetSide 2. For example, the port to the DirectX 11 renderer is going to be a huge improvement, which is already priming PlanetSide 2 for better, more beautiful future.

We also expect PlanetSide Arena to attract a new audience to the PlanetSide universe, as well as reinvigorate past fans. Side by side, PlanetSide 2 and PlanetSide Arena will offer a huge variety of gameplay choices for everyone to enjoy. A taste of the Arena will almost certainly leave some players wanting to experience the original war... and when they do, we will be sure to have a warm seat ready for them on a Galaxy.

With Oshur and the rest of our plans for 2019, with the assistance we will see from the PlanetSide Arena team, and with the unique, unmatched MMOFPS experience that PlanetSide 2 already offers, there’s perhaps no better time to get into or back into PlanetSide 2. 2019 is shaping up to be a great year!

See you on the battlefield!

- Nick Silva
Producer, PlanetSide 2

Oh, I almost forgot. The DirectX 11 upgrade is already on the way to the PlanetSide 2 test server! Stay tuned, and we will let you know as soon as it is ready for your testing.

It looks sorta fun, the best part about this is that they've clearly not given up on the Planetside brand!

If this becomes a hit I think we will also see further investment into Planetside 2, possibly a Planetside 3 as well.

Team Deathmatch could be fun, especially if the gameplay isn't way too different from PS2

If this is a hit, why on earth would they invest money into another game? The logical financial step is to invest money and effort in expanding the game that works and makes you profit. If I were their accountant, that's exactly what I would advise them.

For many years I was a financial accounts manager. It's not pessimism, it's realism and sound financial planning. Like those freaky clowns and their midget car that keeps on falling apart, I may not like them but that doesn't make them less real. Freaky clown bastards!

Though I haven't seen any sort of new news or them pushing it that much considering it's due out end of the month...
