So I found a some tips and I modified my useroptions.ini file accordingly. I gained somwhere in the range of 15-40 fps depending on fight and area. The interesting part is that GPU load has gone from 30-35% with my previous settings to 45-50% on my GXT 1080. CPU = Ryzen 1600X. 16GB DDR4.

I have 150fps in warpgate, capped by max fps and I feel I gained at least 15 fps in all fights.

The game looks better than before tbh and runs smoother.

Below is my useroptions.ini settings, overwrite your current if you want to try out these settings. - note you might have to adjust resolution to fit your screen. Also Field of view is set to 74, you might be more comfortable with less.

The useroptions.ini file can be found in your PS2 installation folder, right click and select edit, it looks like this;
.useruser.JPG

[Display]
Mode=Fullscreen
FullscreenMode=Fullscreen
FullscreenRefresh=0
FullscreenWidth=2560
FullscreenHeight=1440
WindowedWidth=1920
WindowedHeight=1080
Maximized=0
RenderQuality=1.410000

[Rendering]
OverallQuality=-1
GraphicsQuality=1
TextureQuality=0
ShadowQuality=0
LightingQuality=1
EffectsQuality=1
TerrainQuality=3
FloraQuality=4
ModelQuality=3
RenderDistance=1400.000000
Gamma=0.200000
VerticalFOV=74
ParticleLOD=2
ParticleDistanceScale=0.40
FogShadowsEnable=0
VSync=0
AO=0
MaximumFPS=150
UseLod0a=1
BloomEnabled=0
MotionBlur=0
Smoothing=0
GpuPhysics=2

In addition here are some nvidia settings i use for this game specifically;
usersettings.JPGusersettings32.JPG

Here are some screenshots with the settings above, I'm getting 45-50+ fps with 96+ on both sides.

Instructions unclear. Walls dripping with the blood of the unborn.

But seriously, thanks for the writeup! Will give it a go tonight.

I added some screenshots of what the game looks like with the settings, had to upload to imgur bc it wouldn't insert properly to the post @Juggernaut ? - could you try to post a picture and see if it works for you? - i tried attach files, insert image and insert image with link. All resulted in just "."

Ok so some feedback:

Shadow Quality=0 ... I would recommend against this unless you really run with a 1060 or a laptop or something similar. Shadows convey important depth information and many times a shadow outline of an enemy player has given away their attempt to jetpack over me from behind.

LightningQuality=1 ... Also only recommended for very low end rigs or older cards. If you have anything like a GTX1070 or up you won't get much and you give up a lot of visual quality.

FloraQuality=4 ... I guess it's a matter of taste. If you're after high framerates and don't care about how bland the world looks, turning off flora is the best way. But if you want at least a LITTLE eyecandy, 1 (low) is a reasonable setting.

FogShadowsEnable ... Really only saving a few FPS, and not worth it on a 1080. Also this is a highly situational setting which doesn't apply to all time of day conditions. I'd leave that enabled unless you play on a laptop.

AO=0 ... Ambient Occlusion is easily the most expensive setting. Highly recommended to turn off unless you really want that additional shadow fidelity.

UseLod0a=1 ... use a little fewer polygons but uses more memory. Depends on your card whether this actually gets you some FPS.

BloomEnable=0 ... Saves virtually no FPS on a modern card. I'd leave that enabled.

MotionBlur, GPUPhysics ... not supported, changing these does nothing.

Smoothing=0 ... Very recommended for competitive play. I don't see any justification for turning this on in the first place, really.

Here's some comparison, Irathi's recommended settings:

And here's my settings:

My settings:

[Rendering]
OverallQuality=-1
GraphicsQuality=3
TextureQuality=0
ShadowQuality=4
LightingQuality=2
EffectsQuality=3
TerrainQuality=3
FloraQuality=3
ModelQuality=3
RenderDistance=6000.000000
Gamma=0.000000
VerticalFOV=74
ParticleLOD=3
ParticleDistanceScale=0.650000
FogShadowsEnable=1
VSync=0
AO=1
MaximumFPS=100
UseLod0a=0
BloomEnabled=1
MotionBlur=1
UseAspectFOV=1
Smoothing=0

Disclaimer: I'm running a standard GTX1080 with no overclocking, the CPU is an i7 6700. You'll notice that even drastically reducing settings doesn't get me much higher FPS. I'm playing on a 100Hz screen.

In summary, if you're after FPS at all costs, and you have a low or mid-range graphics card, then Irathi's settings can help. But I argue that they're most definitely NOT making the game look better ;)
If you're hurting for framerate, check that AO is turned off. That's the most expensive function of the lot, and IMHO the one with the least visual impact.

Here's some comparison of Ambient Occlusion. This is AO=1:

And this is AO=0:

@Toumal ill have you know there is nothing wrong with a 1060. I run low medium graphics and get in big fights 90fps+ standard is about 110fps. mhy shadows and lighting are both low cause it does mean i see c4 fairies much easier.

My Setup

GraphicsQuality=2
TextureQuality=1
ShadowQuality=0
LightingQuality=1
EffectsQuality=2
TerrainQuality=2
FloraQuality=1
ModelQuality=3
RenderDistance=2018.000000

Agreed, low shadows and lighting is the way to go on your card. People playing on something like an ultrabook should most definitely turn off shadows and lighting completely though.

bumping again - maybe new info based on DX11 changes anyone?

maybe i am trying to push my little 1060 too much (*running 2560x1080 ) , only getting 50FPS in Koltyr

even if I change it to 1920x1080 its only at 60FPS - perhaps its what I am stuck with,

(*yea - new monitor :p )

Since DX11 I am forced to run higher graphics. The frame rates are better but I hate all the distracting effects. I honestly preferred it looking like a potato had rendered it....

I still rune mine at potato, I can update this post with my current INI settings tonight.

I agree that all the effects makes for too much of a distraction, it's just too much lights when contrasted to the dark scene. At potato at least you can see what you're aiming at.
