I've been noticing increasingly that as an outfit (and the TR generally) we've been getting pinned down a lot by air, and to a lesser extent ground vehicles. Naturally some of this will be to do with the Reaver being extremely OP at the moment but I think the only real way to respond to this growing problem is if we use a combined arms approach. Largely I think we need to form an air force, made up of people who enjoy flying a lot and wouldn't mind spending a reasonable amount of their online time in the air.

As opposed to now when we take a gal or 3 and take an all infantry approach I think it would be extremely beneficial if we also took a couple of libs and maybe 5 fighters to escort the gals to their target, and keep the airspace/groundspace clean of enemies whilst the base is pushed. Mosquito pilots can easily be support roles such as engi or medic and land/bail out if they are required on the ground. An additional advantage would be you would have several highly mobile units which could be sent to capture surrounding outposts if the base was in danger of being lost. The presence of a cohesive air force would make the job of ground troops so much easier and allow the zerg to concentrate on base caps rather than running around outside, as well as being a great ps2 training experience for those involved.

Please let me know what everyone thinks, if people agree it's a good idea I'll happily take volunteers and keep the ball rolling with regard to organising this.

Thanks,

BRTD has always taken a more "ROLL ZE TANKS!" approach for the most part, but the faster-pace gameplay of PS2 had made us more like an 82nd Airborne with Galaxies, you are correct. I almost always take my A2A fitted Mossie when we go somewhere with a Gal, but it will take, as you said, around 5 or 6 A2A fitted Mossies to be able to quickly, and effectively deal with 3 air targets.

Great Idea placid, i was thinking of using tanks first in PS2 , but the reality is that air is overpowered atm and tanks are really weak.
if we had 3-5 aircraft escorting us, that would mean a better chance of getting to target and setting up. that means we would land the gal and get AA out in a timely manner and help our aircav we get hit on two fronts atm, ground troop and aircav. its either one or the other that overwhelms us. we stop ground troop taking out our gen and then the reavers get control of the sky around us and its game over.the last few times we were at indar excav site. i counted 22 aircraft at it. shelling the shit out of the tower.
our next step of our plan for BRTD is too setup divisions which will do different jobs in the outfit. ie aircav, tanks and infantry and maybe cloaking.
i would suggest setting up a aircav only sq. ie mossie, lib and gal.
i'm crap at flying a mossie but i can make a gal dance. no interest in a flying a mossie tbh till they fix joystick controls(die hard fan of flight sims)

I like the idea. I enjoy flying a gal or a lib.

but the fast pace of a mosquito gets me!

I remember hearing that the outfit will be split into 3 Divisions like Infantry, Armour and small Air Group and wasn't too sure if it was still happening (as I've always advertised this on Recruit posts) So glad to hear from Jugg it still will happen :)

It reminds me of the Total Recall Event we organised with PSTV where we everyone was split up which I enjoyed and was successful with the Infantry (turned into GG group as few people chose Infantry), Armour and Reaver/Mossie groups in their own mumble channels and Officers able to talk throughout the channels.

Also for PSTV, it's closing down. Shame :/

Gals would need the anti aircraft guns ,but the stock guns are quite strong as well. Flares are nice but they only keep missiles off you for a short time and its a long reload time , ie 1min+ (hopefully they fix and boost them ie have a pack of 5 or something like that)

Anything that can improve the survivability of the gal would be ideal .

Excellent, that all sounds good to me. If it's alright with you Jugg shall we just use this thread for people to register their interest in the air force as they have been, and when we've got enough people down I/we can start talking to everyone interested further and start getting it all organised?

Here's mine:

Character Name: Placidjw

Mosquito Certs:
A2A 'Tomcat' missiles
A2G 'Hellfire' Rockets
M18 Rotary chain gun
Flares
Composite Armour
100% Afterburner fuel
Repair speed + time - Level 3
Acquisition timer certed to < 1 minute.

Liberator Certs
Tank buster nose cannon (Utterly ridiculous against all armoured targets, especially other libs and gals)

The air group would not be for me, i just cant fly the damn things! ill main as Engineer / MBT, i have always had a soft spot for tanks ( even if they do get raped by air atm). i have enjoyed tonight by flanking the enemy to give you guys cover at quartz when i logged in, and it was fun sat hull down on the hill above ripping into the vanguard colomn trying to take you guys out when holed up there. and thats what i do, i can follow orders dont get me wrong. but sometimes i can see the benefit of a tank in the right place, rather than a "heavy/max" on a roof of a base. ill add the squad wasnt listed and it to an age to reach you guys!

2 vannies and 4 snipers 2 grunts and 1 gal kill assist in 10 mins i felt smiley . :) .

but im wondering about the armour certs, is there a table somewhere that says what addition it gives, and if when the side armour is applied doest it jusd add to the HP bonus or is it dependant on the side your hit on? therefore hit once on left spin tank around so you have fresh armour on right?

combined arms makes an efficient group.

I hate to be that guy but if you find yourself being attacked by enemy air, just have people pull Burster MAX's. Two of those MAX's can shut down the airspace over any base almost entirely, throw in extra and any aircraft within sight get rocked out of the sky.
MAX's are easily obtained at most bases especially if you have an infiltrator hack an enemy weapon terminal, they don't cost many resources and they can be refitted quickly to DC's to mow down any infantry if needed.
All that said having an air force to call in when attacked by masses of armor or what not would be awesome and if the people in it enjoy flying then why not.

^ what about en-route to bases via armor column? We will need Sunderers to roll with AA maxes, and mayhaps a skyguard or two. The original post was made before the introduction of the skyguard, the buffing of the AA Maxes, and before the Sunderer even existed.

We could shout out some time that the air support should f.e. go to Amerish WarpGate, spawn a mossy and go practice "maneuvers" on the closest enemy, in an organized manner.

Voice communication will be key for air due to the enemy speed, our respawn rate and lack of real passive defence (commonly known as "cover") in battle. I'd like to practice that.
