Hey, I've been toying around in Blender last night and today with a helmet I wouldn't mind wearing myself in game. This isn't finished as I want to continue adding to the front and back, nor is it great as it is the my 3rd ever model I've made and for a while so I haven't learnt all the know how yet in modelling.

What I want it to be is a tank crewman helmet for TR. I had mixed ideas of what I wanted it to look like but thanks to Jeff's profile pic gave me some direction to what it could look like. I am planning making two variations, one: full faced 'Prowler Gunner' helmet near to what is below, and second version would be 'Prowler Veteran/Commander' which will remover the front (Hat and Ear Guards stay on) but with a microphone reaching out in front of the mouth and and a 'visor' which will be over one eye, both branching from the ear guard on the left side of face

http://i.imgur.com/7htIrkB.png (only been working on one side and mirrored it, I do want to differentiate the Ear protectors with other antenna and camera on opposite side)

Sadly looking at it mirrored and together it does seem to look like the Engineer Composite helmet so I do have to continue adding few bits on it :p

What do you think? I'm proud with it being a newby :D

I suggest you post this also on the player studio forums ( here and here) to get feedback from T-Ray, the gatekeeper, himself.

Tbh, I wouldn't be surprised if he dismissed any cap-like design as not being consistent with the TR look & feel so I would ask his feedback first before putting any more effort into this.

Needs smoothing groups, id add some more shape to the grill as currently it looks to NC. But like roflsky says, go post up on the forums to get feedback.

Tank gunners wearing closed helmets.... getting your mk.1 eyeball onto a sight optic would be a drama in a pratical view point. Also having a helmet inside in confined space = bad.

For example I have two helmets, a gunnery and a pratical - The gunnery one has a slope arc above the ears (think wheel arch) so a headset can be slipped in under the helmet to form a comfy snug fit.

I would go with an open face/Re breather combi (think pilot) as inside a turret it can get quite toxic

When I get home ill post a few real life examples but still a really good effort.

Where does one get blender? i have always fancied making a war weathered helmet....scratches...scuff marks...general veteran wear and tear with a vietnam style ace of spades or something cheesy scratched on like "born to respawn" or something

I see where your coming from, why I didn't think of some that I'll never know, got carried away with looks :) Sounds great to me.

EDIT: Probably just aim for making 1 single helmet than at end

Some pics to help with shaping would be muchly appreciated :D I have looked online but didn't really follow the design of them, reason why I shaped it like a cap is to make it look different from what is modern day (seeing as this is just a few years ahead)

This is what I have recreated last night and mornin (Chin strap was from the example they gave you)

And from your suggestions and my thoughts:

Now how would anyone feel if I added a kettle somewhere?? Brew on the camping :)

Also on note for blender dotz:
Download: http://www.blender.org/download/get-blender/

And a guide I used BUT it has been down for past few days? :/ The basics and other are free but is subscription for more advanced stuff (Could probably find same guides somewhere on youtube anyway for advanced): http://cgcookie.com/blender/cgc-series/blender-basics-introduction-beginners/

There are other free 3D programs listed here: https://forums.station.sony.com/playerstudio/index.php?threads/list-of-free-software-for-new-people.2/

this is what i meant by the arch ways. Then add an ear piece to both ears with an antena. A very simplistic style. (First pic - click to enlarge)

I want to make a helmet for each faction and have been wanting to do a mix between the Russian and WWII US skullcap http://historypreservation.com/hpassociates/images/tankhelmetsdisplay.jpg

Also - Skii goggles over the "traditional TR goggles".

Helmet + skii goggles + skull shemagh = win.

sort of the idea.

Or a very gritty look.

Another take on the "arch ear space"

Re:Re: Terran Republic Tank Gunner Helmet (3D Newb here)

were you going for the Destroid look DW?

I freaking love the concept but you can see from here where giving the caps peak a curve really adds a good effect and since the idea of the TR armour is to include curves, go for it :)

Also I think you have the top of the helm/cap placed to high, if you bring it in line with top of the head I think you'd get a better effect.

If you ever get it finished and up onto market place you'll have a sale from me right away :cheer:
