As some of you might know, I am a professional advertiser. I love building stuff in my free time and due to a project downtime in the coming weeks I can put some effort into something BRTD-useful: A landing page to recruit new members for BRTD.

What the fuck is a landing page?
A landing page is - opposed to a full page, just what a fluffer is in porn. She makes you hot, but you finish off elsewhere. So a landing page is basically a very effective way of saying: This is awesome, now do that!

But we have all the information on this website!
Yes, we do. A lot of information! But people on the internet have an attention span of about 10 seconds. If they don't know what to do, they will be gone within that time. So basically a landing page is a refined, compressed, polished version of "about us" and "join now!".

What do you say on that landing page?
Well, that is easy. It's all basically about who we are, what we offer (bad jokes included) and what we expect. The rest is just psychology and emotions.

What are examples of good landing pages?
http://en.wordpress.com/restaurants/
https://www.facebook.com/mobile/camera
https://www.google.com/webmasters/
http://www.squarespace.com
http://everest.com

What could a BRTD landing page look like?
Well, with Planetside half the work is already done. We have a ridiculously beautiful game and we can produce great media with it. With the help of the movies by Edge and Steve, almost half the work is already done. Now it is just a matter of carefully curating our storytelling, putting it together and make it look fancy.

Here is a first example. In the background of the first bit is basically steves timelapse movie in an endless loop. (without sound) After that comes about us, our three hottest features (not shown), a video (not shown) and a last big "You should really join us!" button (guess what, not shown).

All work in progress....

Good idea, and it looks awesome. We really need some media attention. ( Not that kind that INI has now... :) )

The about page...

Is that just gibberish or does it actually mean something in German? The narwharl reference is really throwing me off. IGNORE THIS, IT DEFINITLY GIBBERISH.

By the way if we have an idea of what we want for reuitment text already let me know and I'll try to include it in the video.

You will need to speak to Jugz as he is the admin for the website. I know he has been looking for somebody to inject some style as most of our pages are static.

Can I suggest you somehow implement the BRTD wolf logo into the first landing page? Goes nice together with the full moon.

Keep in mind, that the first section is actually steves timelapse video. So the background is moving and changing constantly. I wanted to keep the elements on there as few as possible to not block the awesome imagery.

Hi folks,

Some nice work so far, I really like it as front page,we can see weather we can fit it in on the website.A custom HTML shouldn't be too hard to do imho.

On another note: I was planning on redeveloping the website to use Xenforo Forums
This website has reached the end of development, as most the of the modules in the site require Updating/Upgrading to a different software revision (Joomla 2.5 to Joomla 3.1 for example), In English there is not much more I can do, any time I update part of the website it breaks another module which require hours to days to fix. can talk about it more on mumble.

These are some of the modules we use:

[ul]
[li]Joomla CMS [/li]
[li]Kunena forums [/li]
[li]Jomsocial for the member management and community section.[/li]
[li]Acymail for mass emails [/li]
[li]and a lot of other software plugins[/li]

[/ul]

I have put in hundreds of hours into the site. I was planning to move another all in one Forum/ content management system instead the 20 or software modules we use atm.
The aim is to simplify updating and control of the website. I want to delegate more control to officers/Moderators on how people get access to certain parts of the forum i.e. officer, Squad leader and so on. Most large community are shifting from WordPress/Joomla to purpose built Forum software. This will make it easier to keep updated and add new content.

[sub]**The text you call gibberish is simply standard dummy text Lorem Ipsum, website and media have been using it since the dawn of time. It’s just use a filler so you space out a website page or other doc correctly [/sub]

we are ok for security wise for the short/medium term

Board Software is somewhat of a religious discussion. There is so much good software out there and most of it is really easy to maintain.

As for an economical standpoint I would suggest going where the majority of the market goes. The two most used board softwares are without a doubt vBulletin (free) and the Invision Power Board (a bit costly). Both are quite common on the internet and I have administered the latter for years.

So I would suggest to get your hands on the most used software you can find for the simple reason I use Wordpress for most of my clients: It is not going to go away! A service with millions of users will stay active no matter what.

If you need anything or need some advice, feel free to ask.

(And that landing page will be plain JS & HTML, maybe a bit of php to pull from census.)

I have been researching it for several months, vbulletin was taken over, the developer from vbulletin lefted and setup Xenforo, They built a vbulletin forum like from the ground up with none of the mistakes. a lot of large clans and companies are switching to xenforo. But we need to do more research and i'm open to suggestions.

These are some of the board software I have looked at:

[ul]
[li]Simple Machines[/li]
[li]vBulletin[/li]
[li]XenForo[/li]
[li]Invision Power Board[/li]
[li]phpBB[/li]
[li]Vanilla Forums[/li]
[li]XMB Forum[/li]

[/ul]
[sup]**Note One major restriction is that i have to port this forum and user database over to the new forum[/sup]
The examples were paid for software modules, ranging from 20- 100 euros to update. Xenforo was around 150 euro to buy, vbulletin and so on was around 250 euro for a basic version.I rather go over this via mumble ,we can cover more ground quicker.

Also a major Plus to the landing page If its static ,would be its page loading speed. no database to load and so on, which i think is great Idea.

UPDATE:

I've started to set up a working enviroment and created the first section of the landing page. Everthing is very beta, nothing is optimized. But just for a first taste of what to come:
